Tax Collector St. Lucie County, Florida
The county Tax Collector is a constitutional officer of the county elected by the residents. The responsibilities of the Tax Collector includes:
1) Real Estate/Personal Property Tax - Taking the millages levied by each taxing authority and the property value assessed by the Property Appraiser and billing all property owners. This would include real estate tax and personal property tax.
2) Special Assessments - Billing for water, sewer, lighting, storm water and other special assessments levied by county and city government as well as special taxing districts.
3) Local Business Tax Receipts - Collecting the fees for and issuing Local Business Tax Receipts required by the county.
4) Tourist Taxes - Collecting the 5% tourist tax from hotels, motels and other rental units and remitting it to the county.
5) Alarm Permits - Collecting fees for county alarm permits.
6) Fishing and Hunting Licenses - Issuing fishing and hunting licenses and collecting appropriate fees on behalf of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
7) Department of Motor Vehicles - Operate local DMV office for issuing license plates and titles for cars and vessels and remitting the fees to the State.
8) Distribution of Tax Collections - Distributing collected taxes and fees back to the appropriate taxing authorities.
9) Sell Tax Certificates - To conduct an annual sale to sell tax certificates on delinquent taxes to assure revenues to the taxing authorities at budgeted levels.
10) Bankruptcies - To represent the interests of taxpayers and taxing authorities in bankruptcy proceedings to assure proper collection of taxes.
